[series]: Marvel Comics' Ultimate Comics Spider-Man
[character]: Miles Morales / Spider-Man
[character history / background]: wiki entry
[character abilities]: Miles' Spider-Man abilities include:
- superhuman strength, reflexes, agility, and durability
- wall-crawling
- invisibility
- spider-sense (a sort of precognition, sometimes manifesting in dreams)
- venom blast (delivering an electric shock by touch, often has a bit of a delay)
- web slinging (with the help of Peter Parker's web shooters)
[character personality]:
At first glance, Miles is your average middle schooler. He's a bit socially awkward, he likes to goof off with his friends, and he cares more about his parents than he'd ever admit in public. Unfortunately or fortunately for Miles, he happened to get bitten by a genetically-modified spider which his uncle Aaron, also known as super thief the Prowler, stole from Os Corp, and started to develop superhuman powers.
Keep in mind that Miles is living in a New York City that was just under attack from mutants, so when he starts developing these strange abilities, he's terrified that he's a mutant. He wants desperately to tell his dad, but his dad hates all things mutant so he has to keep it a secret. The only person who he tells is his best friend Ganke, who he trusts with everything. He hates lying to his parents, but it becomes necessary when Ganke convinces him to become a new Spider-Man.
Miles could just do nothing with his new powers, but after Peter Parker's funeral he began to feel a sense of duty. The phrase "With great power comes great responsibility" echoed from one Spider-Man to the next.
That's not to say it's easy, becoming the new Spider-Man. Miles has to prove himself over and over to Nick Fury, Peter Parker from a different dimension, Captain America, and all of the Ultimates team. Most people think that at only thirteen he's too young, but he wants to help, and with the nation in chaos, they can use all the help they can get.
Miles is unsure of even himself when he's fighting as Spider-Man. At first, his new powers surprise him, and he wins often through luck more than anything. His sense of duty keeps him from running away from danger, and his determination pulls him through to the end.
That determination falters, though, when he's scared or grieving. When his uncle, the villain the Prowler, dies during a battle between them, Miles is wracked with guilt, thinking his uncle's death was his fault. He still puts on the costume, but he's hesitant and scared. The line gets drawn, however, when his mother dies. At first he's in disbelief that it even happened, but once it sets in, he cries out and shreds his costume in anger/grief, screaming "No more! No more!" He's afraid of his dad getting hurt, or finding out his secret, so he stops being Spider-Man altogether, and resists for a full year his friends' attempts to persuade him to take it on again. Eventually he does, though, with the knowledge that he has a responsibility to help people with his powers.
When the villain Galactus breaks through into the Ultimate Universe, Miles puts on the suit and starts trying to save people. One of the people he tries to save is his father, to whom he unmasks himself. Jefferson, being wholly distrusting of superheroes and people with superpowers, backs away and refuses to go with Miles. Just then, a plane crashes nearby and Miles must leave his dad to go save the passengers. When he gets back, Jefferson is nowhere to be found. Miles is devastated that his dad blames him for the deaths of his uncle and mother and won't go with him to save his own life.
[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: Cataclysm: The Ultimates' Last Stand #3, just as he steps into the portal with Reed Richards.
[journal post]:
[third person / log sample]:
It takes Miles a minute to realize he's not where he's supposed to be. Going through a portal to another universe will do that to you. He's expecting to be in another city, but he's not expecting to be in The City. He's standing by the fountain, and all of his memories come flooding back in. There's his phone, lying on the ground next to him. He picks it up, debating whether to post or to wait. In the end, he decides it's better to wait until he's in real clothes again. Wishing his Spider suit had pockets, he decides to explore the City a bit, get refamiliarized and find a change of clothes.
How had he forgotten the City? It's weird, now, both remembering being here and remembering not remembering being here. He wonders if anyone's worked out a definite way home yet. He doesn't want to just abandon everyone to that giant purple monster. But, if it's anything like last time, he'll go home the same time he left, and not remember he was gone at all. And who knows? Maybe someone here will have some idea how to stop that thing. All he can do now is get some clothes and see if anyone he knew is still here.
